Fitts's Law: HRI Course Module

Interactive Simulation | Numericals | Assessment

Theoretical Foundation

Fitts's Law predicts movement time based on Information Theory.

1. Shannon's Theorem 17

$$ C = B \log_2 \left( \frac{S + N}{N} \right) $$

$S$: Signal, $N$: Noise, $C$: Channel Capacity.

2. Motor Analogy

Distance ($D$) is Signal. Width ($W$) is Noise.

$$ ID = \log_2 \left( \frac{D}{W} + 1 \right) $$

3. Movement Time

$$ MT = a + b \cdot ID $$
